Cold and Flu Part 3 - Treatment

Wow, it’s a new year and things are going great! However, before we go further, the final poston the Cold and Flu series is slightlyoverdue and it’s time to wrap it up. Sowithout any further ado, here it is!

The final post in the Cold and Flu series is about treatingyour illness. Right now, there aresniffles and sneezes all around, and there are a few things you can do in orderto kick the cold or flu to the curb and feel fresh and charged up. There are two things your body definitelyneeds when you come down with a cold or flu: rest and water. When you aresick, your body becomes dehydrated as the immune system fights off yourillness, and you need to keep hydrated as best as possible. Drinking lots of water will definitely helpyou out here. Rest is equally asimportant. Sleeping helps your bodyrecharge its battery (so to speak), as it is very draining and exhaustingbattling a cold or flu. Try not tooverexert yourself and keep daily activities to a minimum. No going out with friends or hitting the gymhard, your body needs to be relaxed and resting as much as possible.

Other methods for fighting these illnesses (from the CDC) arelisted below:

No smoking, alcohol or caffeine – these all reduce the effectiveness of your immune system as it fights off the illness.
Take Vitamin C – though, do not overdo it, only take the recommended amount as it will help your body combat those pesky viruses.
Take Vitamin D3 – when you are sick, your Vitamin D levels get lowered, so replenish them with a vitamin tablet or by getting some sun.
Eat spicy food – spicy food helps clear the sinuses and can help you breathe a little.
Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands – germs spread very easily by touching things with your hands, so be sure to keep them clean. Also, don’t touch your hands to your mouth or eyes, as those are easy ways for the cold or flu viruses to spread.
Eliminate stress – when you are stressed, your body becomes stressed, making it more difficult to fight off any sickness. Relax and rest often.
Gargle some salt water – 1 tsp of salt in a warm glass of water; gargle this and your sore throat will get some relief.

· Take hot showers – the steam and heat help clearthe pathways and drain liquids from your sinuses.

Cold and Flu Prevention

Part two of the cold and flu series will cover ways to prevent getting sick with one of these illnesses. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has listed three methods to better protect against the cold and flu.

Get a flu vaccine

Flu vaccines protect against the 3 most common viruses for any given year.
Individuals 6 months of age and older should receive the vaccine (under 6 months old is considered too young).
High risk individuals should always receive flu vaccines to decrease the likelihood of severe flu illness. High risk individuals include:

Young children.
Pregnant women.
People with chronic health conditions (such as asthma, diabetes and lung disease).
Individuals over the age of 65.
Health care specialists and those who live with or care for high risk individuals.

Take every day preventive actions to stop spreading germs.

Cover nose and mouth when you cough and sneeze.
Wash hands often with soap and water (if there is no soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand rub).
Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth (germs spread this way).
Avoid close contact with sick people.
If you are sick with a flu-like illness, stay at home for at least 24 hours and limit contact with others.
Disinfect your home regularly (use a solution of 2-5% bleach to kill viruses and bacteria).

Take flu antiviral drugs if prescribed by a doctor.

Can make illness shorter and less severe.
Important to use early for the seriously sick (within the first 48 hours).
Antibiotics will not work and can lead to resistant strains of bacteria.

In addition to the three tips provided by the CDC, there are further ways to help prevent contracting a cold or flu. Everyone should get plenty of rest, eat a well-balanced diet (this will be covered more in depth in the next part of the series), exercise regularly, decrease stress, cut back on unhealthy habits (like smoking and over-consuming alcohol) and to use hands-free household devices. Hands-free soap dispensers and trash cans are a good way of protecting against the spread of germs. Most use an infrared lens to open or dispense (some trash cans come with a foot opener instead of using an infrared lens). What's A Cold? What's A Flu?

So we are at the start of cold and flu season, and, as many people seem to be sniffling and sneezing, we thought it would be a good idea to do a little PSA on these two common illnesses.

To start, when is cold and flu season? While it varies in length from year-to-year, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that cold and influenza (flu) season typically starts in October and can last all the way until May, with January and February typically being the peak months for infection (basically, when temperatures are cold and everyone is staying indoors more). While both of these illnesses have similarities, it is very important to know the difference between symptoms of the common cold and flu.

Both the common cold and flu are caused by viruses that spread mostly through direct contact. A cold can last two or three weeks, with most people getting better within seven to ten days. During infection, the common cold is primarily a head cold, centered in the nose, although general body aches and tiredness can be experienced. With a cold, the most common symptoms are congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and a sore or scratchy throat, and rarely a fever (mostly experienced by infants and small children). Influenza, however, is quite different, as the entire body experiences aches and extreme fatigue, with coughing and a fever over 100° F being quite common. With a cold, the symptoms slowly begin to appear and are generally mild in their severity, whereas the flu has a sudden onset and the symptoms can be quite severe.

Now for a little history on influenza and the common cold. The symptoms of human influenza were first described by Hippocrates roughly 2,400 years ago, though, the first convincing record of an influenza pandemic was of an outbreak in 1580, which originated in Russia and spread to Europe through Africa. In addition, it is believed that the flu may have spread from Europe to the Americas as early 1493, when the entire indigenous population of the Antilles was killed by an epidemic that resembled influenza after the arrival of Christopher Columbus. The largest flu outbreak recorded was the 1918 flu pandemic, also known as the Spanish flu, which is estimated to have killed 20-100 million people worldwide and had at least a 2% mortality rate (much higher than the usual rate of 0.1%). The common cold was first named in the 16th century due to the similarity between its symptoms and those that experienced exposure to cold weather. In the 18th century, Benjamin Franklin researched the causes and prevention of the common cold, and concluded that “people often catch cold from one another when shut up together in small close rooms, coaches, etc. and when sitting near and conversing so as to breathe in each other’s transpiration.” Even though viruses had yet to be discovered, Franklin hypothesized that the cold was passed between people through the air, and recommended exercise, bathing, and moderation in food and drink consumption to avoid getting sick. Around 150 years later, Franklin’s hypothesis on the transmission of the common cold was proven to be true.

School is starting and summer is ending, but that does not mean that the fun is all over yet. Enter Labor Day! It is time to celebrate the invaluable contributions of the United States labor workers to our everyday lives. In the United States, the first Labor Day was observed on September 5, 1882 by the Central Labor Union of New York. In 1894, following several deaths during the Pullman strike, President Grover Cleveland, fearing further conflict and alienation with workers and unions, pushed forward legislation and Congress signed Labor Day into law, officially making it a national holiday only six days after the end of the strike. The government selected the first Monday of September as the date for Labor Day each year, and has been celebrated every year since.

Labor Day validates and honors all the hard work laborers of the United States, as well as the difficulties and obstacles they had to overcome.

Today, Labor Day signifies the beginning of the school year, the start of the NFL season, the last day to fashionably wear white and the final summer holiday. Summer is officially here, and that means that America's Pastime is in full swing! The College World Series is back and is almost down to the Final 4! A little history on the College World Series (CWS)...it began in 1947, with the first two years having the final games played in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The inaugural winners were the Cal Bears, who defeated Yale 8-7 to become champions. In 1949 the CWS moved to Wichita, Kansas, before finally settling down in Omaha, Nebraska in 1950. The CWS has remained in Omaha since 1950, with the games being played almost entirely at Rosenblatt Stadium (1950-2010). This year, 2011, marks the first year that the games are being played at the new stadium in Omaha, TD Ameritrade Park. Spring is giving way to summer, and with that, so comes Father’s Day. Did you know the first observance of Father’s Day was on July 5, 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia? It was organized by Mrs. Grace Golden Clayton to celebrate the lives of the 210 fathers who had been lost in the Monongah mining disaster on December 6, 1907. The beginning of a national celebration of Father’s Day was actually not until June 19, 1910, when Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington organized a day of observance for fathers after Mother’s Day was established. Initially met with criticism and the fear of becoming a joke, Father’s Day was not officially made into a national holiday until 1972, six years after President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers on the third Sunday in June.

Little Bits On Memorial Day

Well, apparently there is another holiday coming up at the end of May, and it happens to be one of my favorites. Barbecues, beach and park trips, golf, Indy 500, baseball, and a Monday off are pretty nice, but the best part about Memorial Day is celebrating and honoring the US soldiers that gave their lives for this country while serving in the military. I did some research into the holiday and found some pretty interesting facts that I thought I would share with all you Bandits!

Memorial Day actually started out as being called Decoration Day, and originally began as a way to honor the soldiers that died during the American Civil War. By the mid-1860s citizens were decorating soldiers’ graves in both the North and South, prompting this even to be called “Decoration Day.” The first known observance of this holiday took place in Waterloo, New York on May 5, 1866. Two men, General John Murray and General John A. Logan, helped bring the attention of this event nationwide, including General Logan (who was the commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic – the organization for Northern Civil War veterans) issuing a proclamation that Decoration Day should be observed nationwide on May 5, 1868. On May 30, 1868, Decoration Day was officially observed for the first time, and by 1890 every northern state had adopted Decoration Day as an official state holiday. The date, May 30, was chosen because it was not the anniversary of any battle from the Civil War.

The holiday gradually changed from Decoration Day to Memorial Day, which was first used in 1882, though it did not become more commonly used until after World War II. Memorial Day became the official name by Federal law in 1967, and with the passing of the Uniform Holidays Bill in 1968, the date of observance became the last Monday in the May. The nation’s oldest continuously running Memorial Day parade is in Ironton, Ohio, where it has been a tradition since 1869.
